joined up thinking to help you achieve financial security

About

The perfect match for her love of mathematics, philosophy and a desire to help people be in charge of a more secure financial future.   Jill has recently established,  Jill Turner Associates, an ethical and creative,  Holistic Financial Planning Practice at Sheffield’s Electric Works.  An active member of the personal finance society and celebrating twenty five years of an extraordinary career,  it all started by accident, with a borrowed suit and a huge promise.

Age 51, although 19 in musical years, Jill was born in Barnet, North London and probably inherited a propensity for detail and customer service from her parents, a greengrocer’s daughter and a master builder’s son who also came from a long line of Pearly Kings.   After graduating from the University of Bradford with a Philosophy degree and no specific “philosophy jobs”, Jill’s dream of financial independence and buying her own home, seemed impossible.  That was until she spotted a fanciful eighties recruitment advertisement.  It promised twenty villas in Spain and fifty or so Porsches, for anyone young, ambitious and motivated.  Curiosity led her to borrow a friend’s interview suit and swap the security of working in social services, for a rate book, monthly targets and an area sales manager.

A career in door to door canvassing was thankfully short lived, when American Life became a casualty of the financial crash in 1988.  A move to Legal and General followed and thus began twelve glorious years as a Financial Consultant with a first class company and first class training.  At the time of leaving, Jill had achieved the Certificate in Financial Planning and was managing the financial services for three North London estate agents.  Believing her clients would be better served if she became an Independent Financial Adviser, Jill joined one of the leading national firms and went on to establish two successful networking groups, Independent Advice for Independent Women and Workplace Alliance.

Initially life as an I.F.A. was a massive learning curve not only in product knowledge but also in terms of continual legislative, taxation and economic changes.  It also seemed as if the IFA world was “blighted” with managerial coup d’etats, changing CEO’s, share cancellations, office closures, mergers, re-issuing of contracts, trade sales, sporadic bullying and other corporate shenanigans.  All of which left Jill to consider her options more than she would have preferred.

Finally in 2012, motivated by enduring relationships and positive outcomes for clients, some of whom are the children of the children of the parents she advised back in the late eighties, Jill decided the better way forward was to set up her own practice.  Free from sales targets and the shackles of other people’s business plans, often at odds with her own, Jill can apply her own values, experience and knowledge, to best serve her clients.  To hopefully continue for many years to come to help people buy their homes, manage their portfolios, plan for a permanent income, protect their businesses and pass their assets to their next generation.  She is also interested in the relatively new concept of impact investment.

Jill holds the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning and doesn’t have any villas in Spain or any Porsches on the drive.  She has however, achieved two of her life goals and lives peacefully in a humble stone cottage in the PeakDistrictNational Park with her family and a rather demanding Staffordshire Bull Terrier.  Currently with two young children, spare time is a rarity but when not working or playing Duplo,  Jill has a passion for broadcast journalism.  A passion that has sparked many international friendships, one of the most eclectic music collections this side of the Pennines, five years worth of Global Roots and Grooves radio, an invitation to teach radio production skills at Sheffield University’s Summer School and the opportunity to dance in the rainforests of Borneo.
